FFS, what are people becoming that they find offense in every friggin little thing?
How about changing the name of the Cleveland Browns? Is everyone "brown" on that team? Should people with brown skin be offended? Oh, oh, then we have the Chicago Blackhawks. How about the Minnesota Vikings? That should upset the Nordics. What about the Chicago White Sox? Is that racist? Maybe the Irish should take offense to a team named the Boston Celtics? Who takes offense to the use of "Yankee" in New York Yankees?
Is becoming a stupid society a natural occurrence or do so many people seriously lack a life? Why are people finding offense in everything that has a color or a gender attached to it? Should the world be gray to make all these sensitive people happy?
The US is becoming one stupid country.
Brown was in relation to a family name, not a skin color
At one time "tar heel" was a pejorative describing residents of North Carolina. Now NC is the tar heel state and a mascot for one of their universities.
What happens when PETA protests the use of animals as mascots?
When was the last time you walked into a place of business and someone said "Hi white/black/brown person, what brings you in"? I've never been addressed like that and I'm pretty sure that isn't the norm when a NA walks into a business, or is that the new way to greet people?
That's my point. You don't, so why use it to label / define a team.

1) It was never used a racial slur
2) The residents started calling themselves Tar Heels
3) Native Americans never started calling themselves Redskins
You can't force the Native Americans to take a racial slur and reappropriate it as a source of pride.

Why aren't Native American groups going after Disney for continually releasing Peter Pan on dvd when they want sport teams to change their name and/or logos for being "racist"
Are we to take your argument to be, "why don't Native Americans and there allies go after every perceived negative depiction of Native Americans?"
