Here is another fact. Heroin is very effective for treating severe end stage, cancer pain, with less drowsiness, and is used for that in the United Kingdom.
Quote:
Under the chemical name diamorphine, diacetylmorphine is prescribed as a strong analgesic in the United Kingdom, where it is given via subcutaneous, intramuscular, intrathecal or intravenous route. Its use includes treatment for acute pain, such as in severe physical trauma, myocardial infarction, post-surgical pain, and chronic pain, including end-stage cancer and other terminal illnesses.
Because the BigPharma and alcohol lobbies write BIG checks.
That is only part of it. The govt actually is controlling shareholder of those corps and profits from the shares through their investment funds. They also make a great deal from the so-called war.
Decriminalizing can keep parts of the war going, but then this starts to lead in another direction. Seems more govts are starting to see where this is going and are trying to get ahead. If they legalize it they get to regulate it and corner the market, but it does effect the incoming profits of some so it will result in adjustments.
In addition to things like cigs and alcohol, prescription and even over the counter drugs are also responsible for a lot of deaths as well as other negative health issues.
Prescription drug abuse is a huge issue, and even when used as prescribed, a lot of pharmaceuticals can do damage.
True. Legal doesn't make them safe. In fact legal can lead people to naively assume that means they must be safe.
Yep. I just heard a news story about this kind of thing. Acetaminophen, for instance, when taken in even slightly higher than recommended doses over a period of a few days can cause severe renal system problems and results in a few hundred deaths in America each year.
The state in which I live is supposedly #1 in the nation for prescription drug abuse as well.
I had a so-called "Drug Treatment Specialist" tell me marijuana is not a drug.
Well, in some sense it is simply a plant, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have psychoactive properties.
I don't consider it a "drug" in the same sense that processed and chemicalized drugs like Prozac or Cocaine are, but "drug" is a pretty fluid definition.
I mean, anything you ingest can alter your body chemistry at least temporarily, whether it be LSD, beer, paint thinner, aspirin or a plate of mashed potatoes.
