Depends on the crime. Also there are liability issues for the employer if he hires a violent ex-con that goes on to commit another crime at the workplace. A family is suing the Navy because they claim they knew the Navy Yard shooter was crazy and did nothing.

Things aren't as clear cut as the bleeding hearts would like.

I jumped ship, went AWOL, pulled a "John Galt".

You have people jailed for personal amounts of pot yet someone who's been arrested with DWI multiple times can still drive.
