As for "Goldwater" and "Rockefeller", it's hard to imagine what they held in common. If you want what they both had in common, then your vision for a political party is extremely narrow, indeed.
To the OP: this will be the common response you will get from the far right wingers of the Republican party.

Funny how people really want to be Republican, but can't quite wear the clothes. Even the good ole saying I'd be Republican, if they were more Democrat.

The OP lost me at against hunting and gun control now what Republican would say YES to that.

Gun Control: Is a steady hand! Yes, you can say I'm for gun control also!

It may be but that is not mutually exclusive of the truth. Rockefeller was a member of the old Republican establishment on the eastern seaboard. Goldwater was the vanguard that eventually ushered in Reagan. The party has now backtracked with the tarring of the tea party faction but if one has no principles then what is its purpose?

What's wrong the following?

Low taxes.

Minimal government interference in our lives.

Staying out of foreign entanglements.

Clean elections.

Secure borders.

People standing on their own and not expecting a government handout.

Safe and secure streets free from the criminal element.

Freedom to practice one's religion.

The ability to defend oneself with one's own weapon against predators.

Any of those you care to disagree with?
