Germany, France united in anger over U.S. spying accusations | Reuters

The two-day Brussels summit, called to tackle a range of social and economic issues, will now be overshadowed by debate on how to respond to the alleged espionage by Washington against two of its closest European Union allies.
For Germany the issue is particularly sensitive. Not only does the government say it has evidence the chancellor's personal phone was monitored, but the very idea of bugging dredges up memories of eavesdropping by the Stasi secret police in the former East Germany, where Merkel grew up.

Embarressing, How pathetic of the United States Government. The paranoia is growing, the fear is rising, soon the American people will have to think for themselves and realize Democrats and Republicans have failed this nation miserably. We will soon be isolated from the world in our state of fear and paranoia.

cue the neo-cons who say who cares about France and Germany?

I can see what you're saying, but if Americans aren't going to get outraged over the government spying on them, they're not going to get outraged over the government spying on France and Germany. In fact, they probably think it's only fair.

Yeah most Americans are more worried about what is happening on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or Honey Boo Boo.
I May have to look for residence in Costa Rica or St Lucia soon.

Isolated? That seems to be exactly what a lot of people are calling for. Germany and France better start getting some money together to invest in their own defence.

There is a difference between isolation and not being empiracal.

America has set the standards for arrogance and intrusiveness over the last half century.

Isolation was the word used in the post I replied to. If France and Germany ask us to vacate the military bases in Europe, it would actually save us a lot of money. We should think about doing it anyway. They don't even seem to undertand that we share our intelligence with them, so not only would they have to build their own defences, but also their intelligence.

Your inferring that the US intelligence services are gracious enough to tell the German and French governments what has been learned from them? Surely they'd already know the information though, as that is where it had been obtained?

How would they know if we find terrorists exchanging information in Germany? They would know only if they are doing the same as what we are doing.
