There is no law, or regualtion that states an Amb must stay at a post...and defend it. A ambasdor is an presidential appointee. Moreover, he is still an American citizen with free will. He is not bound be any code which forbids his from leaving his assignment for any reason. An ambassador does not need or have to wait for permission to leave if their position is not secure.
An Ambassador is not attached to the DoD in any form.
And the state dept has a responsibility to protect ALL US Ambassadors and their staff as they serve at the request of the president. I guess Ambassadors and staff should sign off an acknowledgement that they serve at their own risk and understand that if there is a threat of harm it is up to them to get themselves out of harms way.

Its great everyone can look back on this with 20-20 hindsight. The 60 minute piece didn't change one thing and didn't bring out anything new. Someone made a judgement call on security and it was wrong. Reagan made a judgment call which was really bad judgment in sending the Marines into Beirut. I don't remember Democrats whining about it two years later.
Again, the problem was less with the poor judgement but more about the lies to try and cover up for the poor judgement.
