I think the story linked in another thread said she was using a blank debit card (one with no name, although I could be confusing that with the belt guy), and that the store didn't stop her or report her. There were some undercover officers nearby when she made the purchase and they stopped her on her own.
The blank card would make me question anyone buying a $2,500 purse. If I was a store clerk, I wouldn't feel comfortable filling that purchase and would probably call a manager to complete the purchase.

We own a clothing business, and once had an out of state customer buy thousands of dollars of merchandise at a show we were doing. We did several safe guards for that purchase that we don't normally do because she was from out of state, and her buying pattern was much different that anyone else. (She basically bought everything we were pulling out of the boxes while we were setting up.) She was an older white woman.
Well, whether or not it was a blank card, Barney's could have gotten the manager instead of going further. It wasn't worth getting the police over.

Well still, the spending part is not something I would be concerned about. It is disturbing, however, that there is so much focus on spending money on a purse rather than about getting profiled.

So, you're right. Maybe it's none of my business how she decides to spend her money but someone with that poor of a decisionmaking ability about money needs a smack with the reality stick.
And it's up to you to give it, right?

None of us can of course answer this question but for this young lady in particular getting badly treated by Barneys is the LEAST of her life-problems if she keeps making decisions like she has.

She returned the purse. Anyone want to bet me her mom heard about her buying a $2500 purse and went ballistic?

Lastly, is anyone else at least slightly amused that a store whose entire point is to sell items meant to create airs of exclusivity is being called out for practicing that? Shallow, judgmental materialism gee..... anybody shocked that people that subscribe to this thinking would be prone to negative views of others by class, race etc?
But if one wants to discuss "self-slavery", bringing up the incident at Barney's is not a good place to start. Could a tax return have been spent better? Well, we know the answer to that, but it's a moot point.

Racism is a serious issue. To say that is isn't is a form of slavery itself. And it wouldn't surprise me that those who look down on others based on class would do so based on race. Why would someone want to shop there? It is about the want to feel important.

My point is that spending $2500 has nothing to do with the fact that she got treated badly. What disturbs me is that people care more about how much money she spent than how she was treated. How is being subjected to racism not an issue?

You really need to wonder?

Cognitive dissonance.

According to the typical Cd poster there is NO racism except against white people these days so it MUST be something that the black person did. If there had been ten cameras and audio these people would still be in total denial.

I'd like to see how your theory plays out after, say, Black Friday.

You also need to know that it's not just black folks who are outraged by what's going on at Barney's. People of all races are of like mind. I dunno......have you ever experienced such a phenomenon?

I would not even say just that, as much as not really caring about the issue of profiling.

Between the two it's the racial profiling. But now that it is an issue the unavoidable reality is going to be where her money comes from. As an anonymous citizen that wouldn't come into play, with a lawsuit and publicity it will be. Is she rich or just pushing her financial limits and being irresponsible with her money? Then it won't matter. But if it's coming from somewhere else, any of it, THAT will be the only issue anyone cares about. And it will be good get it out on the table.
