WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will decide whether the District of Columbia can ban handguns, a case that could produce the most in-depth examination of the constitutional right to "keep and bear arms" in nearly 70 years.

The justices' decision to hear the case could make the divisive debate over guns an issue in the 2008 presidential and congressional elections.

D.C. Once Again Murder Capital, Mayor Brags | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

The above article is pretty old, but the irony never gets less funny.

Bans on guns should be absolutely condemned by the courts.

Well considering that DC just passed last year's total of 169 homicides this week, i'd say lets these folks protect themselves.

The gun ban in DC is ridiculous. I remember growing up there and I was so glad that my Mother's boyfriend was a DC cop, at least I felt safe. I never understood how over the years I could watch so much senseless killing on the streets but honest law abiding citizens were not allowed to bear arms while drug dealers had arsenals at their disposal.

I certainly hope that the Supreme Court will do right by the citizens of DC - it's been a long time coming

They will.

Afterwards, you can thank George Bush for appointing Roberts and Alito.

I dunno, not soooo fast on the thanking GB - it'll be some time before I go that far. I'll need to see their position on a lot more than this DC gun ban

Give DC equal representation first.

This ruling will be interesting. I wonder how it will affect gun laws in other cities and states?

Not sure why this issue is being revisited. Can this washed up city really think it will help lower crime? Do criminals really care about a gun ban? Will they all of a sudden become law abiding and not procure an illegal weapon??!! Leaving the public totally helpless and without defense... those who can still think clearly will either get the hell out or become "criminals" themselves by keeping their weapons to protect their families. Nice precedent to set if there is some judgement against owning guns by our citizenry.

I have a question and after spending half my life in DC, I am in need of an answer. What does DC's gun ban entail? Are we talking about just hand guns or all guns? I am not sure, but I think it perfectly legal for a DC resident to have a shotgun at home. Or is that banned as well?

Gun laws, like any issue dealing with immigration, quickly get tied up in knots as specificities are absent.
