I wish I would've been born during the 80's or maybe even 70's so I could experience if the divide in politics has truly widen over these last few years. My aunt always says that Democrats and Republicans always use to disagree on things, but they could come to a compromise but I haven't seen that since I've actually began paying attention to politics which was about 2008.

I'm friends with Democrats and Republicans simply because I can agree with either side on many issues. Even on this site I have friends who are Republicans, some of which are Tea Partiers, then I have some Democrats and maybe one Socialist.

I value my friends much more than some politician. I have both liberal and conservative friends. IF I want to argue with someone ~ I come here.

All of my friends are intelligent and interesting. I don't agree with all of them on every topic, which is fine with me - it makes for interesting conversations. My family is another story....

when I look at a person or I befriend a person, his or her political background is not an issue. I don't consciously choose my friends and acquaintances by red state or blue state or party affiliation, I try to accept people at face value until otherwise. that's pretty sad if this is what our society have been reduced to. I have friends of both side and I just don't talk politics with them that much at all. as long as you don't eat sleep and breathe politics 24/7 then you should be ok with friends from either side. don't let politics get in the way of a good friendship that's crazy just respect each others views.

No, I would not break up with such a friend, and for the record, I support all of these things except abortion rights.

The founding fathers knew people disagree. Generally no matter who is president they must work with the other party. This is the 1st time I've seen a president be so hardline and say "I will not negotiate". Well... democrats got their way and the people will suffer the consequences of "their bad decision" but they are dragging the others down with them.

You'd look pretty hostile and silly in the process though, and most won't want any part.
Obama's 2008 inaugural address:

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises.

(APPLAUSE)

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.

it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things -- some celebrated, but more often men and women obscure in their labor -- who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

(APPLAUSE)

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works

And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day, because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history

I love my conservative friends and wouldn't trade them for the world. And I know they feel the same about me. People who let politics get in the way of friendships are way too intense and obviously don't value their friendships. Why would anyone let politics dictate their life.
