Statement from Martin's lawyer:

David Cornwell releases statement on Jonathan Martin situation - NFL.com

Quote:
"Jonathan Martin's toughness is not at issue," Cornwell said in the statement. "Jonathan has started every game with the Miami Dolphins since he was drafted in 2012. At Stanford, he was the anchor for Jim Harbaugh's "smash mouth" brand of football and he protected Andrew Luck's blind side.

"The issue is Jonathan's treatment by his teammates. Jonathan endured harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker-room hazing. For the entire season-and-a-half that he was with the Dolphins, he attempted to befriend the same teammates who subjected him to the abuse with the hope that doing so would end the harassment. This is a textbook reaction of victims of bullying. Despite these efforts, the taunting continued. Beyond the well-publicized voice mail with its racial epithet, Jonathan endured a malicious physical attack on him by a teammate, and daily vulgar comments such as the quote at the bottom. These facts are not in dispute.

"Eventually, Jonathan made a difficult choice. Despite his love for football, Jonathan left the Dolphins. Jonathan looks forward to getting back to playing football. In the meantime, he will cooperate fully with the NFL investigation."
Text/message from unidentified teammate Martin received.

It's becoming clear he was harassed by other members of the team in addition to Incognito.

If what you said is true, then a whole lot of NFL players who air their feelings in the press are unemployable.

Look, I don't understand your disdain for Martin - so what is he supposed to do about the team which has condoned a hostile work environment? There is precedent for lawsuits in these cases.

These deluded types of arguments are always the richest. We want to hold Richie Incognito accountable for his aggressiveness....but not out superiors.

RICHIE INCOGNITO MUST BE TAKEN TO TASK! And we MUST deemphasize the message AMERICAN FOOTBALL sends. It is SO important.

Cool...let's avoid circular arguments.

Tell me this; where is or what is the line in cases like these that shouldn't be crossed. I'm sure we can agree that there is a line here between toughening a guy up and hazing him a bit and taking it too far.

Where is too far? Murder? Or perhaps beating him to a bloody pulp? Where is it?

For those of you who say Martin should have responded confrontationally, do you think he should have replied to the racial slur by calling Incognito the derogatory D-word or W-word sometimes used against Italian-Americans? (Did not say the actual words so as not to have the post deleted...realize it is succumbing to PC a little, but I want this to be read by others).

That would probably increase the abuse toward Martin.

BTW, I am just hearing now that Incognito sexually harrassed a woman at a golf event. The list of offenses and reprehensible behavior by him is growing every day. The media does not make this stuff up. Give it up, Incognito supporters. This is such an easy call that it is almost comical if it were not so sad.

Martin will be hired soon, because the situation is starting to bring a black eye to the NFL and one team in particular. You can't show United Way commercials on the one hand and then look the other way when these things happen.

Players like Martin will give any team a tremendous PR boost and especially families with children that play sports that are apalled by these reports. Players like Incognito are going to bring a firestorm of controversy in the future. It is hard enough to compete in the NFL without these controversies. With them, it can be an absolute ordeal.

I think hazing will be simply outlawed by the commissioner for next season and players will be fined. If you can be fined for mistreating an opponent, it certtainly makes sense to be fined for mistreating a teammate.

Believe me, each team will make it clear going forward that tolerating this boomerangs back and becomes an albatross. Hazing is unnecessary and juvenile. Get your joy from beating the opponent. Play an April Fools prank maybe (that is the off season anyways) but these are professional grown men...I use the word loosely where Miami is concerned for the time being, but a stronger more ethical coach than Philbin will improve things.

I'm having a hard time with the words "bullied" and "football player"...maybe if he was the kicker. It sounds so weenie to say he was bullied. What happened to picked on, hazed, pushed around, antagonized...you know, adult words.

You know, they didn't have this problem in the NFL until mothers with soup started showing up in locker room commercials.

If you support Incognito, what you are basically saying is that it is OK for someone to make a racial slur and worse yet a death threat. In other words, if you had a family member, relative or friend that played ball and he told you about a racial slur and death threat directed against him, you would tell them just to suck it up and you would support the player doing those things to him. "It was only a death threat. Don't be so sensitive". Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

There was no way Martin could win in the short term with Incognito on the Dolphins' leadership council(!..?), though he will win long term and Incognito's career is over because of Incognito and his pattern of irresponsible, reckless behavior over the years...not because of anyone else. Quit making excuses for this child. He has had more chances than most players get!

You don't watch much football, do you?

Icognito is FAR from the prototype of the league repeat offenders. That being said, for the most part, the only people really offended by this are women and men who wish they were women. The rest are the ones who want to Icognito to go in front of the firing squad for using the N word.

So you are OK with the death threat even though it is clearly illegal. That is far more serious than the N word. It is not the N-word by itself. If that had been his only offense you give him a second chance, but he was kicked off two college teams for behavior and now he sexually harrassed a woman at a golf event. If you want him to remain in the league, you have a very low standard...no standard, really.
