The governor is a figurehead. The legislature is what determines the color of a state. Virginia is RED.
Seeing that governors can only run for one term in Virginia, this is basically correct. They typically make a promise to do something, win the votes of the people, try to do that thing they promised, and move on. It is the legislature that really runs the state.

The most populated part of a state is what runs the state if there are more people living in the populated part compared to the rest of the state. But with that said, Virginia is basically a red state that goes blue from time to time.

True. Unfortunately, the Senate is 20-20 right now. The Democrat candidate for LT Governor is going to win so he's the tie-breaker. But at the same time, some of these Senate Democrats are blue dog types so I doubt far reaching left-wing legislation will make its way through VA in the next 4 years.

Hey don't be sad, the whole country can't be a left wing nut job haven like Portland OR. Someone has to pay for all that stuff.
Two Barack votes and a McAuliffe. Will VA be considered blue? Is it even possible to still consider it a red state and not at least purple?
Virginia voters bounce all over the place. If McAuliffe is indeed elected I'd describe Virginia voters as patriots, not America-haters aligned with the American Taliban (a/k/a, the "Tea Party").
I will consider Virginia as one huge suburb of the nation's capital. A suburb dominated by government employees.
