I can't remember if it was Denmark or the Netherlands, but one of them (maybe both?) has an immigration "cultural qualifier" (I don't think that's the official name) where they basically make sure that you are comfortable with the culture there. They'll ask you stuff like "does homosexual marriage offend you?" and "are you opposed to legalized prostitution?" If not, then maybe you'd be happier someplace else (like Alabama). Since both are legal in Holland, they are trying to prevent the citizenship equivalent of "people who move next door to an airport and then complain about the noise".
I am all in favor of diversity and multiculturalism, but it really bugs me when folks move here from a country with terrible conditions and then spend all there time complaining about the US, and praising how great they think their crappy little country is. You don't have to assimilate, but at least have a little tolerance.
Otherwise it would be like me moving to Utah and then complaining about how there are too many Mormons.
It's a classic example of the paradox that the multiculturalist faces: what happens when the "cultures" that you let in under the spirit of "tolerance, diversity, and multiculturalism," turn out to have a belief system that doesn't respect "tolerance, diversity, and multiculturalism?" We already experience some of that with Somali immigrants in Minnesota.
Or what if you champion the right for millions of lower class, highly religious immigrants to live in the country in the spirit of tolerance and diversity, and that group of people ends up frustrating other progressive goals you might have due to their religiosity?
But yeah, I like the idea of the "cultural qualifier."
My dad is Dutch and I tell you, he DESPISES that country.
It is filled with prostitutes, drug addicts, suicidal people, and LAZY people.
Not only that, the Ducth are a minority in that country now and their immigration levels are WAY out of control. Crime is ranpant, rape being their #1 problem.
No one does naything about it. This is what they want to model the US after. It is disturbing, at best.
Indeed nirvana, yeah lets be like the netherlands where everything is groovy! The birth control crowd could also take a lesson here, when a country no longer has a birth rate that can sustain itself it will cease to exist as that country. This is a perfect example of what happens when the largest population growth is Muslim immigrants!

"Diversity" is fine....however, I don't see how you can praise multiculturalism after looking at this thread. Isn't multiculturalism exactly what the trouble is in the Netherlands? Seems pretty clear to me. "Culture" is about far more than cuisine, art, or music. Culture is everything upon which a population bases its entire set of ethics and how it relates to others. Some of this isn't really negotiable..Seems like the Netherlands may have worked better before it went "multi"....Take a very laid-back, almost naive, non-violent, non-judgemental country---bring in a vastly different culture, one prone to violence, and allow them to "move in" while requiring next to NOTHING of them in the way of assimilation, and this is what you get--multiculturalism. But the trouble is, not EVERYBODY wins......
