In your definition of freedom, its only achieved at the barrel of a gun.
Washington, and every President before 1946 dismantled the military after war.
Guess they were against freedom?
As I said, if we were invaded by an outside threat, every man and woman would fight and get a gun. Thats who we are, thats how we roll. Its why the British lost after their initial invasion of Washington in the war of 1812. Overwhelming military force is beaten with time, blood, and the will of a free people. Ask the Afghani's how well our military did there.
We only have freedom because of the citizens of this nation, and the laws we make sure our representatives protect. The military is neither good or bad. It has been both
What is problematic, in any case, is that this peculiar, nonexistent connection between “freedom” and the military continues to be perpetuated as an uncontroversial truism, and is met with virtually no resistance, at least within the confines of the mainstream.

I would go so far as to argue that the current form of the US military jeopardizes the sorts of "freedoms" that sycophants who mouth this mantra incessantly value.
The typical hysteria we get from people who resent the fact that our military is necessary, and that this country (and the world) would be less well off it it did not exist.

Do you have proof of this? You do realize that we had an intact military between the two World Wars?

Ah, you're one of those persons who treats "security" as synonymous with "freedoms," eh? Do you often argue that your burglar alarm protects your "freedoms?"
And are you dovetailing into a little argument justifying imperialism because it enriches us economically with your second "point?"
