Then he shouldn't have left to begin with. The Left is so caring that they voluntarily send children back to being oppressed. It's because they want to oppress people too and just LOVE the idea!

Do you and others on the right even believe the crap you post? I tend to think that you do not. Since when is coming to the USA by a raft from a foreign country not illegal immigration in its own way? I thought you were against this type of entry. Do Mexican kids that are here because their parents wanted a better life for them any less important than a Cuban child?

From the link...

Quote:
The 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act led in practice to Washington's wet foot, dry foot policy, which gives Cuban migrants who reach U.S. soil the right to remain in the country.

"I suffered the consequences of that law. They also violated my basic rights gathered in the (U.N.) Convention on the Rights of the Child: the right to be together with my father, the right to keep my nationality and to remain in my cultural context," Gonzalez said.
Sounds to me as if he was glad to be reunited with his father and does not agree with his relative's decision to fight to have him stay in the USA.

The policy of allowing Cuban immigrants to stay in the United States if they made it ashore encourage people to make the attempt by crossing the distance between Cuba and Florida. This is not good policy! If Cuban immigrants knew they would be sent back to Cuba under any circumstance, then they would not make the attempt - it wouldn't be worth the risk. This policy makes it worth the risk.

It's the same as the US government provided a variety of benefits to illegal immigrants and employers hiring illegal immigrants.

If we don't want illegal immigrants to come here, we need to stop providing incentives, of any kind, to come here.

[i personally don't care about Elian...]
ITA with the above. The policy is what enticed his mother to risk both their lives. If it were not on the books, less Cubans would have attempted to leave the island. And FWIW, I am not of the position that Cuba is some sort of "prison." Cubans have a better life expectancy than the US and receive a better general education than many in our country. They also are much better at dealing with natural disasters than we are. I don't agree with their Socialist government, but I don't think that Cuba is a prison and I also don't think Elian would have gone through what he did if our country didn't have this exclusive policy only available to Cubans. If anything, Haitians are way worse off than Cubans and they are turned away and deported even though they also risk life and limb over the ocean to get here.

This whole Cold War attitude about Cuba is played out and unnecessary.

I agree with this too. There should never have been any sort of media involvement in this. Once our country was made aware that the father wanted his son back, his son should have been taken by social services (and not scarred by the swat team with assault rifles) and sent back to Cuba via air with a guardian to ensure his safe delivery. I blame the family for what he went through in regards to his return and being traumatized and I also do think his dad milked the whole situation and that young Elian has been "brainwashed" as sorts, but Americans are brainwashed too IMO. Practically every country's citizens thinks theirs is the best for a number of reason, mostly to do with indoctrination as a child via school.

Agreed. He was an illegal immigrant. Send him back to his country of origin. The kid was, and apparently still is, a political football for both the Left and the Right. He was/is a pawn.

I won't stoop to the level of communists who think family is below the state. I always thought he belonged with his dad, period. Still do despite his silly politics.
