Are we making things better or fueling the insurgency? Will the war ever end while unpopular American troops remain there as an occupying force? And, if not, is it still neccessary for the troops to remain until the Iraqi police and army are up to shape enough to take over the job? What's best for the Iraqi people, likely to lead to the fewest killings, best chance for peace, etc.?

Well, the majority of Iraqis want us out. It is becoming increasingly obvious the Iraqi government feels the need to do exactly nothing as long as we are there to keep everything under control. Terrorism reports claim we are increasing the danger to America with our presence there and are a magnet and recruiting poster for foreign terrorists. I vote Mission Accomplished.

Amen--what's done is done and there's no point in "chasing" after a bad bet. "Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em", etc etc etc....
It's time to "Walk away".....It will be the best of several very disappointing, uninspiring alternatives...we won't "win", but perhaps we can at least succeed in cutting our losses...

Well, America has been in S. Korea for over a half century under peaceful conditions during most of that time. If American presense in Iraq doesn't work soon in promoting peace in the Mid East, like in S. Korea, then it should leave.

Perhaps the freely elected Iraqi government can decide when?

Or perhaps when the troops in Germany come home.
Or the troops in Japan.
Or South Korea.
Or the Balkans.
Or one of the 130 nations around the world.

Good point--but for some reason the South Koreans don't feel the need to blow up the American troops---most seem to get along fine, with an occasional isolated "misunderstanding"....hardly the same situation as in Iraq.

America's presence in South Korea is seen by most of the area's residents as a sort of "security guard" for the region, NOT as trying to force South Koreans to adopt a democracy that they neither want nor understand. And few South Koreans are blowing EACH OTHER up, either.

What if our staying there is encouraging more of them to blow things up? Around 60% of Iraqis believe that attacking US troops is (or can be, in some situations) justified.

We should pull our troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. South Korea, Japan, England, Germany, Italy, Turkey and a number of other countries as well now that you mention it.
