Even in the 1940's the red army lost 7 million men fighting the Nazi war machine...do you really think a bunch of civilians with pistols and hunting rifles could have really stood a chance?
It prevented Germany from invading Switzerland, even though they BADLY wanted that territory and hated the Swiss for being so fiercely neutral.
It is very costly logistically and for morale to go house to house when you are waging a guerilla war against peasants. Afghanistan eats every empire, including ours, for lunch.
Somewhat recently, in California they have banned standard capacity magazines for many firearms.
Then, they attempted to ban (and confiscate) standard capacity magazines that have been lawfully modified to low capacity magazines* (failed.) They did successfully ban 'repair kits' which are basically springs.
Standard capacity magazines that existed previous to the law can be confiscated as a public nuisance.
*(The interesting part is any magazine which is physically large enough to contain more than 10 rounds. This would make some firearms inoperable, as the magazines must be physically that large to work properly, regardless of capacity. Springfield XD comes to mind.)
They banned cosmetic features on semi automatic rifles. (Pistol grip? Now you've got an illegal assault weapon.)
Then, they attempted to ban virtually all semautomatic rifles (Passed, but died to a last minute veto.)
They did, however, push through a bill requiring long gun registration. Registration, historically, has lead to confiscation. I'm not saying that will happen, just that it has happened frequently.
They set up an 'unsafe' handgun list. This is based on manufacturers paying a fee to stay on the list, and having to add more and more silly features to a firearm for it to become certified "safe." One of these things is the ridiculous microstamping idea. Many perfectly fine handguns are illegal in California for purchase as a result. Inches.
Recently, the law changed so these "unsafe" handguns that were obtained via legal means are further restricted from resale. The next logical steps are: Requiring handguns on the current list to be brought up to california standards (reducing available options significantly - and cost rises significantly - in fact I dont know of any new handgun that qualifies as safe for california) and disposal/confiscation/making illegal existing off-roster handguns.
If they are mentally unstable, why have they been released from prison?
Once you are released from prison and no longer on parole, your rights should be restored or else you should remain locked up until deemed fit to re-enter society.
That is the ideal that the NRA and gun advocates want. Keep paying the NRA lawyers and maybe one day you'll get it. Here and now, the state intends to enforce the current laws on the books. You as a citizen are obliged to comply. Certainly not advocate for others to break current law, else you be branded brigands and law breakers by the rest of society rather than the patriots you perceive yourself to be. In the end, you only damage the already shaky credibility of responsible gun owners.

How do you figure ? California has been releasing all sorts of criminals early due to overcrowding these last few years.
They need to outsource them to other states instead of appeasing the state corrections union. So no your premise is totally flawed that once released they should have all their rights restored.

I believe the point is that someone is released to society, they are safe or dangerous whether or not they have firearms.

Shenanigans. The Swiss had a well-trained, well-equipped and (very) well-entrenched army - most certainly not "a bunch of civilians with pistols and hunting rifles".

You can be mentally unstable and not sent to prison...because it's not a crime.
However, they can deem via LEGAL PROCEEDINGS that you shouldn't have a gun handy.
I mean in one breath you are complaining that taking a mentally unstable persons gun is some huge breach of their rights and then in the next you are talking about completely incarcerating them as the logical choice.
I grew up in a small town where you had to have some common sense. If uncle steve is having psychiatric issues it's not a bad idea to clear the guns out of the house.....or if grandma is having trouble with confusion you take her car keys etc.
Again, these laws have been around at least 40 years so all the hand wringing over this being some creeping doom is a bunch of BS. I would urge concerned gun owners to focus on the more serious issues as this one is a time and energy waster.

Pssssh....shaky credibility of gun owners is a load of bunk.
Look at my home state of IL. The RURAL parts of the state have a gun problem no worse than Canada.
The problem is the Chicagoland area with a gun murder rate over 5x higher caused by gangs and drugs that the city doesn't want to spend money on because quite frankly most of the victims are poor minorities and they don't have to worry about too much political heat.
So what we really have are people like you trying to solve an urban problem by blanket application of law onto people that do not have the same problem.
Frankly, the right should thank you guys for continuing to harp on gun issues. It's probably one of the main issues that is going to help cost the democrats the SD, MT, WV senate seats in 2014...plus perhaps a few others.
