More and more government dependency money produces more and more people dependent on the government. Over time, that creates a huge group of people with very little incentive to work.

Also, the biggest reason IMO, is because the requirements for all these programs are set up so that it is a better deal for people to not work and get benefits than it would be if they actually held a semi-low paying job.

Case in point, I know someone who worked in the kitchen of a hospital and did not make enough to get by, they were struggling to pay rent and buy groceries. They were "too proud" to look into assistance, but after nearly being evicted one month, they finally did. They found out that they apparently made "too much" to qualify for food stamps and housing assistance; just barely missed the threshold, and only because they didn't have any kids (would have qualified if they had one). So they quit their job and now get free food and housing, and in their free time they take up odd jobs like cleaning houses or whatnot (only making like $100/week, if that) so that they get the free food/housing based on their income and can now pay for satellite TV (which they previously couldn't afford).

So basically... having a "real job": not able to get by, quitting: living much better. Great system.

As these programs continue to grow, these kind of situations will become more wide spread, where it will be more beneficial to qualify for them (by not working) than it would be to just barely not qualify.

The solution, in my opinion, is to get rid of requirements and instead have something like "Unconditional Basic Income" that was recently proposed in Switzerland. This would eliminate all these ridiculous situations where it is better for people to not work, because it would ALWAYS be better to make more money.
True. If you work for what you want, you will have it much harder than those who just lay around getting all the many government handouts.

We should not be giving welfare types more than what working people have. It now takes over $61,000 to support the average welfare household, yet people who work for a living are very often living on much less.

Maybe because back then people only "needed" money for rent, food, a few clothes, and maybe a used car.

Today they "need" air conditioners, internet service, cell phones, HDTVs, 3 meals out a day, imported cars that cost a lot more than the cars people drove in the past.

Because they can. And they can because a certain political party actively encourages this to secure votes.

Your post reminds me of Groucho Marx. You don't want to be wages slaves do you? What makes wages slaves? Wages.

What makes dependency on government help? Help.

Yeah, because one shouldn't vote for the party that promises to make your life better. You should vote for the other party that promises to make the lives of the plutocrats better.

Most of those receiving government assistance are working poor. The rest are elderly and disabled. The narrative that there is this large group of lazy moochers sucking the rest dry is an invented meme.

I don't know if it's about being lazy or just not motivated to make more out of their lives. Give people a way of living without working for it and that's what you get.

"Hitting the pavement' is pretty outdated for anything but working at McDonalds or something similar.

Most professional jobs now require EVERYTHING to be submitted online; including uploading your resume.

That way, their computer programs can recognize certain wording and throw it out before they actually would have to interview someone.
