Comparing the price of the surgery that my son just had, the price is only about $100 less than the cost at UK medical center. But it is noted that the price for his surgery included his post op brace, muscle stimulation machine, and cryo cuff at UK, and those are not included at the OK center.
For elective, non-emergency, and non-life saving surgeries, sure. Why not have competitive pricing?
But are you going to shop around for your cancer treatments, or have your spouse call around area hospitals while you're having a heart attack?
Hospitals should only be trama centers.
Not procedural, and preventative care.
I didn't shop around, I went with the best athletic surgeon in the area. He is part of the sports medicine team for UK. And the total price was lower at UK if you factor in all of the additional things I would have had to buy at the OK center (cryo cuff $160, stim machine $250, and brace $150).

You made your choice via your criteria.
My comment was that you'd be surprised at the variability.

There really isn't much difference in the price between the two medical centers. The "free market" centers price is just about the same as a big medical center. Where is the surprising variability?

I guess you don't have the same experience I have, then.
I have seen costs vary for the same thing documented to be as much as 6 times the lowest to the highest. I would also assume that some things are closer in cost between places than others.
That the place you chose was lower priced IS surprising, but not outside of "typical variability". What's at issue, is that hardly anyone advertises price... .because everyone expects SOMEONE ELSE to pay the bill.
There are many factors as to whether an institution should be single focus or broad spectrum. This can't be legislated.
I didn't say anything about legislated. The aforementioned point should be the general consensus on what hospitals utilization should be.
