You do realize that your figures for the $18K include "medicare and social security" programs that are exclusively given to the elderly right....
You should read your link better.
The lower income people in this country who qualify for food stamps and/or Medicaid actually do work. You should get your head out of the partisan poop and especially read your own links.
Actually, you want to read that again. It's disability not retirement.
I just thought of something else that would be huge. So many women stay in terrible marriages because they can't afford to leave. I think the divorce rate would initially skyrocket and then level off. Abusive, controlling men would have less of a hold over their wives. It might not be enough to live well, but it would give women the ability to leave and start over. It could have the power to change the whole landscape of marriage by changing the balance of power.
Our church houses homeless families for a week at a time, along with other churches. These are parents who have fallen on hard times, but are working hard to get back on their feet. One of the greatest benefits of living at the different churches on a rotating basis, is that once they get jobs (and they receive help getting jobs), they can save those first few paychecks for a down payment on an apartment. If they also received 1500/mo they could be on their own so much sooner and back to being productive citizens.
I think if we did this it would be a great for many people
For people who did not need the money they will spend it at businesses or put it in their kids college fund.
Business would not have to worry about having to pay to high a wage to their employees
Poor people would already have a boost before whatever money they get from the boost and be better off
It would give employees more power in that they may not have to take the first job available since they have money they can live off till they find a good job for them.
It really is a win for everyone.
Sure. I'm retired and pretty secure, but I would like to help my grown kids out more than I already do. Some are struggling more than others in these times, and having their back would be a lot of assurance for them all when they needed it.
1500/mo is poverty. Yes, I would keep working. I can't seem to get by on less than $7K/mo spending currently....so the amount at which I wouldn't have to work would be about $10K/mo. I have friends that won $6M in the Washington lottery and both kept working their same jobs. Considering the long hours I currently work, I would stop working and just manage my investments if/when I get up to that $10K/mo.
I remember years ago I would not give my husband $5 to buy donuts when it was his turn by buy for their fishing group.
I had the money......but, was saving for a back-hoe.
Yes, I could........but, I won't.
