Make no mistake, racism has been around ever since men realized that we come in different shades. I think the spike of racism has gone up and down though. It has definitely improved over the past couple of centuries, but is still a long ways off from where it ought to be. However, as long as humans can see color I don't think racism will ever be fully conquered.
Yes, there has been "colorism" since ancient times and world wide--even the Old Testament in the Bible speaks of a preference for "fair" skin. But even though the ancients tended to favor "fairness" in complexion, they saw that purely in terms of aesthetics--they did not presume intelligence or moral character based on skin color.

The ancients paid much more attention to ethnicity--nationality. It would totally confuse an ancient Roman for a white-skinned American born and raised in Cleveland to claim closer ethnicity to a white-skinned European than to a black-skinned American also born and raised in Cleveland. A Jew was a Jew regardless of hue, and if you weren't a Jew, being light-skinned did not make you a better person to a Jew; a Roman citizen might have been any color during the height of the empire, and if you weren't a Roman citizen, being light-skinned did not give you an audience before Caesar.

However, "race" as defined in modern times has existed only since the scientific categorizatioin of species--only since the enlightenment. "Race" as defined at that point tied physical characteristics to intelligence and moral character in a way that had never been done before.

The largest divide is base upon wealth and class. A wealthy black person has far more in common with a wealthy white person than they do with a poor black person.

Debatable. There can be a whole host of irrelevant commonalities and only a few undeniable similarities that make all the difference.

Middle class blacks have little social interactions with middle class whites, outside of work and school.

Continue to bury your head in the sand. How many white people go out of their way to cultivate friendship with blacks? The onus is on whites, given this country's history when whites fled at the notion of having to interact with blacks.

FWIW, I do think racially, in this country, whites (in general) would be the ones who would view a larger racial divide based on their fear of black people.

Which shows that the black/white gap is bigger. The average man interacts with a woman on a daily basis, and usually live with each other. Husband/wife, parent/child, brother/sister, etc.

Outside of work and school between blacks and whites it is usually out of sight (and increasingly out of mind as extreme racial paranoia has declined). Go to your average black wedding and if 10% of the guests are white that's a lot, and most will probably work colleagues.

Indeed when blacks do live among whites interactions are often quite polite and cautious.

Why must people forcibly associate with others? Why must a white person cultivate friendships with blacks? Why must anyone cultivate relationships with anyone else? Does freedom of association still exist, or doesn't it?

Which social divide is greater? Blacks & Whites? Men & Women?

IMO, the question maybe should be - Which social divide is -being made- greater?

There seem sooooo many 'divides' these days, unfortunately, it's hard to keep track. Wealth, gender ID, sexual orientation, tax-bracket, age, smoker, greenie, you name it..... Yet, this country has made huge strides in 'inclusive' directions, for the most part - but apparently, to no avail.

I agree - white-male-dad has been kicked to the curb (feminized, 'displaced' by Uncle Sam).....

IMO, all this is much to do over not much.

The duty is on whites? So you want whites to kiss ass. No one owe anyone anything. Your thinking is ridiculous and no one respects a kiss ass.
