It was mostly in response to the anti-gay laws being created there, that some American anti-gay activists are helping with (see Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage). Bryan Fischer was one of the louder voices, calling him a "Lion of Christianity." This opinion piece by Ed Kozak even acknowledges the incongruity.
