politics.ie Should Pharmacies have the Power to give Prescriptions? - Page 54
From an Irish forum:
"Pharmacies have been allowed to issue emergency medication in absence of script for a number of years. This will come out in the investigation.
As a regular on O'Connell Street I think there is another factor. Junkies. Pharmacies on O'Connell street and the surrounding area are plagued by junkies of all ages and all the time, it has resulted in a mantra of "no" to everything and an underlying assumption that everyone who runs into the shop in a panic is really either a junkie or a distraction \ cover for a junkie or group of junkies. This mindset is understandable the entire city center is awash with drug users and law and order is close to breaking down and indeed has broken down after dark.
This family are, appalling as it may sound, collateral damage to the way we as a society have allowed our streets to be taken over and controlled by what can all too often be violent addicts.

"Speaking to a pharmacist on this, he believed that the location of the shop was significant factor.
That location would be plagued continually with druggies etc aside from the shoplifters and drunks. Staff would have siege mentality to repeated dodgy requests and daily hassle. Alot of business would be one off or drug related so little rapport with regular customers.
In addition, it could well have been a locum or foreign trained pharmacist as no Irish pharmacist would want to work there.
Again maybe critical information was lost in communication.
Tragically for the girl and her family, I think if incident had happened almost anywhere else with normal community pharmacy, response probably would have been very different.
You mix peanut allergy with high dose MSG, you die.
People who have allergies that cause anaphylaxis should carry the pen around every where they go. Some people are allergic to bees and they must do the same. I'm sorry for this child and the parents. I didn't read the entire thread but if someone knows this is an issue it is the parents responsibility to be proactive and make sure the child has it available before the emergency. If the parents didn't know instead of going to a pharmacy they should have called 911 stat. Everyone is too afraid of lawsuits and can't just dispense medication.
The parent should have been responsible enough to get the prescription.
Why?
Was the parent certified?
You can't make responsible decisions without being certified.
Everyone knows that.
The pharmacist has earned a Certificate of Hyperpathological Idiocy.
He'll probably be promoted for passing a very difficult test.
