This is not surprising. They think tourism and real estate makes an economy.

However, the real issue here is with the Fed govt.
Despite Legal Marijuana Rules In 20 States Feds Won't Play ...

quote:
But the feds will lay off only if the states create “a tightly regulated market” with rules that address federal “enforcement priorities” such as preventing interstate smuggling, diversion to minors, and “adverse public health consequences.” Those phrases seem imbued with discretion. This memo to U.S. attorneys makes clear that the DOJ can still prosecute growers and sellers.

Floridiots in government are stuck in the past. Reaganomics and the "drug war" are their number one priority. If I was the governor you bet I would push for legal cannabis and hemp farming. Instead I would concentrate on stopping money laundering and drug dealers from investing in Florida. Why are people in power so stupid and think it is moral to ban a PLANT? How about tobacco which is legal to grow but not sell without government approval? Cannabis should be legal to grow but not sell without tight regulation. I want to see it used as a food, fiber and medical product. Children should not be smoking "pot" but they do anyway with it illegal. Since the Fed's jurisdiction is limited to interstate commerce, I cannot see how they can legally stop growing of local plants.

If voters support it that strongly, they need to get it on a ballot. It's a lot harder to stop the will of the people that way.

That statement is a bit of a generalization that could encompass many things. The opinion of the public is indeed something that should be considered when passing laws. I will agree that just because a poll says something doesn't automatically make it a good idea but it is something that should be considered.

While I am a fervent supporter of marijuana legalization, I do somewhat understand the mindset of those legislators who are fighting against it in Florida. Having lived in the Miami are during the early 90's, I can recall the amount of chaos that existed due to the drug boom at that time. Mind you, I don't agree with their mindset, but I can understand it.

Florida has the strictest marijuana laws in the country. I believe anything more then 7 grams is a felony.

5 years, after 2014, it'll be legal everywhere. Government officials don't like being shown they were wrong on policy for decades
