I don't discuss it EVER for this very reason. When I'm with like minded people, or people close to me who need to know what I'm all about, I will tell them. Otherwise I keep my mouth shut. But to be fair, I also have no problem 'shutting up' those who bring up their religion too. I also roll my eyes a lot just to drive the point home.
I don't know where in the Bay Area you live, but I lived in Marin for 4 years, and people there couldn't care less about who was what religion and who was an atheist.

Nobody cares, because I don't bring it up or give them reason to. Most of my friends are either neutral on religion or have enough sense to not talk about it in social settings. I doubt anyone brings it up in convo unless they are looking for a fight.

That is what I mean when I say people don't care. They are pretty neutral in the Bay Area. It's just not something you talk about. If you have ever spent some time in the bible belt, it is very different. A lot of people wear their religion as a badge of honor, and they bring it up often.
Why do outsiders think everyone in the south is obsessed with religion? Nobody talks about religion unless you are at church.
I can tell you there are ALOT of sensitive Atheist who whine and cry at little things like saying "Bless you" when someone sneezes
The southern States are not the only religion obsessed area, just one of the largest. My rule-of-thumb is the ratio of bars to the number of churches. If the churches out number the bars, you are in an area that is obsessed with religion and the less tolerant they are. If the bars out number the churches in an area, then there seems to be less concern over religion and the more tolerant they tend to be.

I frequent the south and own property there. The presence of religion is obvious, but not necessarily in a rude way.
Another poster here indicated that many of their business partners sign emails with phrases from the bible. That's pretty obsessed.
Perhaps athiests in the south are different than those in the north. No one around here cares what others say or do.
