Its amazing that we can have 3 centuries of racism against blacks, by whites who were liberals, conservative, democrats and republicans.......yet people try to explain the black condition via left right BS.
Price is a function of supply and demand. White market demand, with their higher numbers, incomes and wealth, can make or break a geographic area based upon whether whites want to live there or not. Whites did not want to live in an increasingly black Detroit in the late 60's and 70's and the loss of white residents, plus white demand for housing in Detroit, led to an oversupply of housing and a lack of market demand from the more affluent racial demographic, which created the cycle of decline.
Detroit was a victim of white self fulfilling prophecy. Whites speculated that the changing demographic of Detroit would cause property values to decline and the city to decline. Hence, white speculation, or prophecy of the future, CHANGED WHITE BEHAVIOR and ACTIONS in such a way that self fulfilled their prediction. Property values declined because whites were selling out and leaving the city in fear of their prophecy. Had whites never changed their behavior, the prophecy would not have materialized. Per capita crime rates rose for the city because the lower crime rate white demographic was leaving the city which left city statistics more and more a microcosm of the black condition. That is important to note because if Detroit had the average white percentage of the 20 largest cities in America, Detroit would not be in the top 5 for crime. People began saying that its the high crime rate in Detroit that was fueling the exodus, but the high crime RATE was caused by whites leaving. Chicago has had as much if not more crime than Detroit, but Chicago is rarely in the to 10 nationally for rates of crime. That is because it still has a large white population, which mitigates the crime rates from slave descendants. Detroit has a high crime rate because its a city that is over 80% decedents of American slaves. Descendents of American slavery have a much higher crime rate, in America, than non descendents of American slavery.
If you take the fact that the economy in Michigan COLLAPSED and the fact that whites do not have demand to live where large numbers of blacks live, in Michigan, then its easy to see why housing prices are so low in Detroit.

The demographics of crime are driven by unmarried - probably more broadly uncoupled - young men; it's not married black men who are doing the crime.

Detroit is hardly DEAD. Detroit is just not what it once was, which is a microcosm of white America during Americas industrial zenith. Today its a microcosm of black America, during the industrial decline. The outrage should not be over Detroit.....the outrage should be about the condition of blacks in America, relative to whites. Its a "racial" and industrial story that masquerade as a an incompetence, corruption, crime story. A city has gone from reflecting the life of whites in America, during the boom of the industrial era, to reflecting the life of blacks in America, during the bust of the industrial era. I submit to you that in America, you cannot go from reflecting the realities of whites to reflecting the realities of blacks....WITHOUT A DECLINE!!! Black poverty in America is 3 times that of whites. Black unemployment in America is 2 times that of whites. Black wealth in America is over 10 times less than whites. Thus, when a city morphs from being a more of a white microcosm to a black microcosm the difference realities represents the different HISTORIES of treatment and opportunities from the larger society.
Every Midwestern city with a similar demographic as Detroits, which went from being majority white to majority black in the last 60 years, is in a similar situation as Detroit. You can go to Gary, Indiana, East St Louise, Illinois, Muskegon Heights, MI, Flint MI...etc. These places also reflect deindustrialization and the loss of jobs that attracted blacks to the areas to begin with.

Without liberal policies, Detroit would have never been great to begin with. America would never have had such a strong middle class, but thank God you wouldn't have unions, safety laws, or minimum wage!
Also, Detroit is doing about as well as ANY 75%+ black city on planet Earth. You think conservative policies would stop African Americans from having murder ridden cities with bad education outcomes and corruption? Its not like sub saharan africa or haiti has expensive labor unions and high taxes on the rich.

And so......................... prior to the mid 1960s, when liberal policy went into full swing, Detroit was not prominent in auto manufacturing?
The rise of liberalism (and liberal politicians in Detroit) is directed related to the decline of Detroit. How many conservative politicians have there been in Detroit over the last 50 years?
Why not make Detroit a magnet city much like we do with school. As an example close every VA hospital and clinic with 500 miles and open new VA hospitals and clinics in Detroit. Also Pay Medicare Part B and D for everyone in Detroit and give everyone on SS and VA a $20,000 credit for moving to Detroit and buying a home. In one fell swoop you will make Detroit a new hub for Republicans and the Tea Party.
For someone who more than likely never spent a day in uniform and is probably young and therefore quite ignorant, you're awfully hung-up on Medicare and VA medical benefits. But then, those receiving such benefits did things you probably have no conception of. They worked for a living and/or served their country.
