There's just something about this story that doesn't sit right.
The diplomat is gone and the maid is here and her family were brought over here by the State Dept.
The maid went AWOL in June and the NYC police wouldn't take the report because the maid was an adult.

More Drama- One American diplomat is removed from Delhi. Indian media is saying that he/she has been given 48 hours to leave India. This diplomat was involved in arranging husband and two kids of the maid leave India before Indian diplomat was arrested in NYC.

US withdraws diplomat after India expulsion demand - The Economic Times

So charges will stay against Ms Devyani Khobragade but nothing can be done as she has Diplomatic immunity. Well she is gonna be Indian Foreign Service officer till she reaches the age of 60 (retirement) and whenever she comes to USA or wherever, they always have immunity.
I just dont understand what they were thinking before arresting a diplomat/consulate officer??? Now US is left with a maid, her husband and two kids. I will not be surprised if in future the maid or her husband work somewhere for cash at the same salary which Ms Devyani Khobragade was paying but they have earned a Green Card/Asylum in USA.

Ugh, stories like this make me sick...diplomats here use immunity to get around what is essentially indentured servitude. Good riddance.

Other Side story:-
if you look at what that maid was getting, flight tickets, 40000 rupees salary, food, house then I guess it was way way more then minimum wages. But that maid vanished, tried to blackmail and then made up a case because she knew that this way one can get asylum. this was a loophole for her. Now US has 4 immigrants, maid, her husband and two kids. There are many people in USA working on less then minimum wage. How much salary a pizza delivery guy gets, or a mexican fast food worker or a construction worker from Mexico gets? Will we use the word indentured servitude for Waiter/Server as they are not given minimum wage???

I dont know what was the benefit of US other then loss of prestige. Unnecessary controversy and insult for the American Diplomatic staff posted in India who are very nice people.

40k rupees what...a day? A week? A month? You know how much a rupee is worth? (Hint: not much.)

This is about what that diplomat did, which is indefensible. Talking about the income gap is something for another thread.

I nominate this for dumbest post of the week.

Seriously, you're arguing for the diplomat? You're saying being ripped off of your money is the same as working at Taco Bell?

She came home to a warm welcome and India is being a giant #$%% to the USA about their diplomat committing a crime. Yeah, 'cuz we just make up stuff to start an international spat. Yeah, 'cuz we are just idiots like that. Maybe we just hate India and we did this to show how much we hate them. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

How dare we arrest one of their citizens, who committed a crime, who DIDN'T have diplomatic immunity.

HOW DARE WE.

Here's a neat idea, and it would help with our current unemployment issues.

Requires all American companies to host their support for their products here in America.

That way, when you call Dell, or HP for tech support, you would get someone speaking American English.

We no longer support THEIR economy, and support ours.
