Ed Koch at 88: New York
Ed Koch tells of Andy Cuomo's mayoral campaign tactics for his father in the 80's. Evidently he does not belong in NY with that kind of hatred.

"Take, for instance, his longtime grudge against Andrew Cuomo, who was all of 19 when he was managing his father Mario’s primary campaign against Koch in the 1977 mayor’s race, and the city was suddenly papered with posters playing on rumors about the bachelor Koch’s sexual orientation. “Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo,” the anonymous posters urged

so much for Andrew Cuomo as a Democratic rising star. Back to Biden 2016. Presumably, 'clean articulate' is not as offensive as "Vote for Cuomo, not the homo.'

The Koch campaign's equally un-PC riposte was "a vote for Cuomo is a vote for the Mafia."

He alleged that his son had said he'd heard a truck with a loudspeaker say, "A vote for Cuomo is a vote for the Mafia." I don't believe that ever happened. And if it did happen - which I don't believe - it was an isolated incident...

Oh please, give it a rest.

Born and raised in NYC, and though still young recall the 1980's all to well (great time to be in NYC and young IMHO, but I digress).

Attitudes towards gays nearly 40 years ago cannot be applied now; especially in light of how Andrew Cuomo defied his church, state conservatives and others by forcing through gay marriage laws. Since then he has also expanded healthcare and other rights to trans, including forcing Medicaid and private insurers in this state to cover all trans services including sex change operations. Most recently as in a two weeks ago AC signed into law a bill that expands anti-discrimination in housing to trans.

Am no fan of "The Mouth of Albany", but am not going to let those who don't even live in this state, much less around at the time dredge up old dirt to fling about.

For the record Ed Koch *never* came out of the closet and in various positions during his political caused harm to the LGBT community. Forget his actual position at the time but Ed Koch was responsible (IIRC) for LE raids on various gay bars and hangouts in the West Village. This would have been before he was mayor obviously.

Being gay himself Ed Koch the LGBT community of NYC no huge favors; he was very slow off the mark in getting mobilizing a citywide response to the rapidly growing HIV/AIDS crisis for a start: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/20/n...-whispers.html
