Environmentalists and island residents are basking in victory since the Port of Portland shelved a request for the city to annex its 800-acre property, and back out of a city-port agreement guiding future development on 300 of the acres.

But the port’s Jan. 8 announcement leaves the city with fewer avenues to provide industrial land for future jobs, as required by Oregon land-use law. That could put pressure on Metro to expand the urban growth boundary, perhaps converting more Hillsboro-area farmland into industrial acreage — and diverting future jobs outside Portland.

City left with fewer options after port drops island plans

States have sucky economies if they relied on limited economic avenues which have since crashed. It has nothing to do with politics.

Stronger Economy – Blue States Or Red States? | EconoPolitics

"In the wealthiest 25 states, there are 15 blue, 9 red and 1 purple. In the poorest 25, there are 17 red, 6 blue and 2 purple. When it comes to wealth creation, there is a significant advantage in the blue states."

Blue states carry this nation economically.

They maybe Bluestates in Presdidential elections but they give out all kinds of goodies to their corporate friends to keep jobs in state. Also Most blue states have the advantage of location (ie being on the coast).

Just look at New York- Gov Cuomo has to put the communist mayor of New York City in his place before he drives business away from the state.

No doubt. and Mayor DeBlasio is about to turn New York City into a third world country again, like it was in the 70s, when he drives away jobs with his unrelenting ambition to punish business.

The Portland Tribune is a dump of a paper that tends to be more negative to Portland. If you read the article the truth is half way down.

Quote:
The port would have been required to invest millions before the city would rezone the property for industrial use, she says, and the port, and potential terminal operators, wouldn’t risk such investments without certainty the project could go forward. The port didn’t want to get the property annexed and then shelve the project, she says, because it would lose the ability to reshape development requirements in the future.
Developing West Hayden Island for industrial would be like developing Forest Park for residential, Portlanders will fight tooth and nail to protect their natural environment which is why it is still a beautiful state and city today. Also there is still plenty that could be redeveloped on and around Swan Island.

Also Hillsboro has been very active in trying to secure themselves as being the second city in the metro and has been willing to work in the mindset of urban planning and doing great controlled developments.

I think there is a certain irony in some one who claims to be of not only one of the nations poorest demographic, but the worlds, complaining about blue state policies that mostly benefit the poor.

I visit a friend regularly in the area, there is a lot of places to redevelop and expand to outside of that one tract of land. Parts of the city that wouldn't take millions in investment before it even could be considered for use.

It is also their city, the voters get to decide what happens there. For some one who seems to love to talk about self determination you love to tell other people what to do.

Another thing is I don't think the city should be the ones to foot the risk, if the ports want to take that risk it is on them, but the fact that they didn't is proof they weren't even sure if this risk would pay off and it makes no sense to destroy a natural habitat over a bad risk.

Blue states are more urban and are the economic centers of this country; of course they generate more wealth. It's where corporate America operates from.
