'Black' is a wavelength of reflected light.
Culture or random light wavelength?
Look up Charlize Theron, she is a WHITE hollywood actress from SOUTH AFRICA. By your terms then, she is "African American" so what does that say about how F'd up being PC is?

I have never heard Gary Player, Ernie Els or any other white golfer from S. Africa call themselves Afro-American either.
If Colored is good enough for the NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of COLORED People, since they claim to be the "voice" and "represent" ALL of it's "brothers and sisters", it should be good enough for the rest of us.
Why haven't THEY changed what THEY call themselves yet?
I had one black friend tell me to please not refer to him as African American as his parents immigrated to America from Jamaica.
In identifying people - it is common to say "white" female or "black" male or "middle eastern" male.
It has nothing to do with country of origin.
Culture also has nothing to do with one's skin color.
So I don't think it is as simple as you would propose, ABQ.
oh, that was because your friend was Jamaican. we are talking about americans of African descent who are descendants of slaves in this country, not the descendants of slaves in Jamaica. your friend was right to correct you, but that doesn't mean black americans still don't prefer to be called African American.

as has been stated 1000 times on this forum, immigrants from Africa in this country tend to identify with their country of origin, not the entire continent of Africa. Charlize Theron is south African, not just African.
We are all "just Americans" until we get pulled over by crooked cops, move unwanted into a neighborhood that dislikes 'black people' or apply to a company that has maintained a whites-only employment ratio. Then, the politically correct color-blind perspective dissolves.
African American seems condescending. We call white people white, not European American.
Yes, we call people white. But we also call people Italian American, German American, Polish American, Portuguese American, etc.
Just as whites can be all these ethnicities, blacks can be African American. They can also be Jamaican American, Nigerian American, Somali American, Dominican American, etc.
