He said he is an American and if I have to define his race, he is a black American of Jamaican descent, just as I would be a white American of European descent.

He feels it is ridiculous for people to dub themselves African American. We are all "Americans." Period.

He reminded me that a lot of folks who like to say they are of African descent probably aren't, anyway - because slaves weren't exclusively from Africa. They may be from some other West Indies tribe.

Just explaining what he said and it made sense to me.
Ludicrous. I always hear that idiocy from West Indians. If you are from the Caribbean, have dark skin, nappy hair and other features that come from African people, you are of African descent. In most of the English-speaking islands, the vast majority of the people are descended from African slaves. Period.

There is no need to use hyphenated descriptions, it only helps further promote racism and stereotypes (this country has enough racism we don't need more).

You're right but this got nothing to do with having or not having authority. No one can stop or change anything in this world. This is just a discussion about the ever grown and stupid political correctness disease alot of people suffer from.
Was Reagan being politically correct when he said "I'm an Irishman"?

Being politically correct is worse than being racist. The media is king when it comes to offending by trying not to offend.
No, usually they just use "Italian" or "Mexican" or "Irish" My grandmother came from Ireland and for a large part of my childhood I was "Irish" not Irish American, just Irish. I also remember the Italian kids we were were also called just plain Italian. And nobody whined about political correctness or hurramphed "This is America!"

Yes and neither do I. However, others, ESPECIALLY white people, get bent out of shape if you do not use "African American." I am NOT African American. I am a black man, who was born in Oakland, California. I wasn't born in Sierra Leone, etc.

African American is a term, used by white people, to make themselves feel better. It has no real meaning and/or issue in the world.

Charlize Theron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yes, she is African American. How does that make it wrong for black people to call themselves African American?

The only time I call a person black is when I have to give a description of that person. Instead of dancing around the right wording I just call it black.

Of course not. Black people are the only people whose "Americanness" is questioned in that manner. Ironic, isn't it?

It's a term used by black people who appreciate their home and their ancestry and acknowledge their heritage.
