Here is the difference. St. Patrick's Day isn't about another country's politics or history. St. Patrick is a saint in the Catholic religion. Yes, we celebrate those of Irish ancestry on that one day but we have a whole month dedicated to Hispanics as an ethnic group. I just don't understand celebrating another country's history, battles or politics in "our" country. It has nothing to do with us.

It was first celebrated among Mexican-Americans in the 1860s in the Gold County of California when news arrived of the victory over the French outside Puebla. It became a tradition amongst the Mexican population of the Southwest over the years. Yes, eventually it got commercialized by beer and tequilla companies. So did St. Paddy's day though--which has gone from a religious celebration to a day of Irish heritage to a day of drinking green beer and Irish car bombs.

So what does St. Paddy's day have to do with the US other than the fact that a lot of Irish migrated here(just as a lot of Mexicans have migrated here).

They might, that is what I imagine would happen on 'Merica Day.

Again, St. Patrick's day isn't celebrating a political event of Ireland. Cinco de Mayo is about celebrating a historical, political event of Mexico. It has nothing to do with our country.

Holy Cow, alert the media.

The only thing they object to, if you'd read the article you posted, was the work 'Merica.

From the link you posted, but didn't read:

Students had originally proposed “’Merica Day” as a spirit day theme, but the name was rejected by building administrators who felt “’Merica” is slang “often used in a negative stereotypical way to describe life in the United States” and “disrespectful to our country,” Principal Mark Eversole wrote in an email sent to parents Tuesday morning.

The students changed it to America, all is well. relax the knickers.

Nice attempt a fake outrage, anyway.
One would think, given the perfectly plausible explanation offered by the principal, that the OP would be glad it was cancelled.
Oh, well.

I suspect that is exactly what the principal thought it was going to be.
