Strange thread title, but I didnt know another way to put it. Im sure 5 seconds after hitting post it will come to me.
So socialism....what things do we do that are socialistic.
We pay for k-12 education. As someone else pointed out-you chose to have kids, why should I pay for them?
Social security. Somewhat arguable, but everyone pays in wither they like it or not. I've seen many people argue against it.
Healthcare. Theres a mixture here, medicaid, medicare, etc
Unemployment insurance.
and many many more. The question is...how much socialism is OK?
For those that say none-describe what you think the country would look like. I've had some fascinating discussions about this, involving police as a insurance policy provided by people buying services, or paying for specific ones.
There will always be people who take advantage of social programs, but society can't survive without them. And anyone who says it can is kidding themselves. If this country had and every man for himself attitude, there would be a lot of death and sadness. A completely capitalistic country will leave the poorest and most vulnerable behind.

I agree with you, but some people, primarily hard core libertarians, have some ideas that are interesting. A lot of them are either fee based, or service based. Im kinda surprised no one has really bitten on this. I mean there are a ton of people who scream socialism and theft about things...you'd think they would have some ideas.
Don't confuse services with private industry in your attempts at minimizing socialism.
Services that are for governing purposes and are paid for by the government (via citizens) are different than the government owning (in full or part) the manufacturing and sale of products from private companies.
Doctors (for example) who want to be self sustaining should not have the government forcibly in their pocket books and balance sheets.
See I've heard this, that opportunity would be much larger. The most complex part of the discussion was how laws would work, and what would control individuals behaviors-which tended to be collectives sort of. but it was not a socialism type. I wish I could remember it all, he had the most well thought out ideas on how it would all work.

You don't have to wonder what a society with so-called "socialism" would look like. You just have to look at most of the capitalist third world--e.g. Haiti, Guatemala, Saipan. A wealthy elite at the top, desperate poverty for the vast majority of the population, and a vicious system of state repression to keep things that way. That's what raw, unregulated capitalism gets you.
All socialistic - I'd hate to be without any of them.
