I've followed James Bruno for some time now. He spent years working in the State Department and often gives great insights into its working. His novels have received acclaim from many sources and I found them to be great reading. So, I was pleased to find this article on his blog and thought to share it with others. And this really caught my eye:
There is a big difference between the political appointees and the career diplomats, in that the only thing the political appointees tend to be good for is getting in the way.
About 30% of diplomatic appointments go to political, as opposed to career diplomats. This practice has a 100 year history in benign locations. All nations do this. The US excels at it.
This has become very controversial, especially under Obama. 1/3 of his appointments have been political and they were given the cushy assignments. The career appointments get the crap assignments.
It is noted at the top the number of career and political appointments were made.
It wasn't too long ago that there was some rumbling between N Korea and Japan and Caroline Kennedy, ambassador to Japan, almost swallowed her tongue when interviewed on the situation. Actually, I think she did because someone else who had more experience in diplomacy (compared to her zero experience) spoke on behalf of the US.
Being an ambassador isn't about having a smile plastered on your face, entertaining, doing a curtsy and knowing which fork to use at a 7 course meal.
People who have the credentials and earned the position of Ambassador should be appointed, regardless of the country. Their careers are put on hold and take a back seat to unqualified individuals who did nothing to serve their country other than serving their president with financial contributions.
This isn't just an Obama thing it's been going on forever. A foreign diplomat post equates to a reward and a vacation for political donors. It's pathetic at best.

Why does America vote for so many stupid unqualified hacks?? That is the question. I think it's because the US has been so dumbed down a gdam idiotic commecial can sway their vote. Now folks on a board like this pay attention and know the difference even though we disagree many times. The rest are just useful idiots to be toyed with. Hell lies and more lies sway many votes...........gay marriage is more important than national security to many.
