Gay marriage is much more contentious to Christians. The Bible doesn't forbid inter-racial marriage and there are examples of it in scripture. The Bible clearly does forbid homosexual acts. There are people that will obey God's law above all else.

And perhaps you missed it, but there were a handful of Christians quoting the Bible back in the day who said that certain passages did prohibit interracial marriage.
And nothing is stopping people from obeying what they believe to be God's law. The legalization of same-sex marriage will not require you to marry someone of the same sex.

And YOU are free to obey your gods will, but you can not force others to live by YOUR religious beliefs.
Then call it something else that sounds more committed. Marriage isn't exactly a great institution these days with so many feeling it's just a ceremonial commitment that's easy to get out of if it doesn't work out. Heck, many heterosexuals don't even get married anymore. Like I said, I have no problem with SSM. I was just wondering why they chose this fight instead of civil unions, which I believe would be a far more palatable concept for people to accept.
You mean, like segregation? That worked out so well.
Same rights for everyone, not some lesser-grade "right" that's more "palatable" to the bigots.
