It's big news, yes. Good? No. But we already know we disagree on that. The main issue here is not same-sex marriage, it's state's rights as defined in the 10th Amendment. This has to be, and will be a Supreme Court test on the 10th and 14th Amendments.

Fundamental Rights trump States Rights because if I get married in one state, it should be honored in any state I go to. We live in a country that is a collection of states, not a country of 50 countries.
We are not degenerates, SocialAtheist, we are citizens too, we pay taxes too, this is our country too and we will win this battle as the battle against interracial marriage was won and it just may be with the state of Virginia again and you bigots will scream, yell and cry, but that does not matter, for civil rights and equal rights are everyones, straight, gay, god fearing and non believers, every race, every religion, we are all US citizens and freedom and equality are not predicated upon sexual orientation or believe it or not, degeneracy. All states will one day have to recognize and allow same sex marriages as they all had to recognize interracial marriages, even if it is kicking and screaming, they will be dragged into the 21st century. Our country does not go backwards, we go forward, it has always been that way and that is why no state has ever ever been able to reverse their laws and ban interracial marriage, not because of popular support. Equality will prevail.

At that time more than 70% of the population of southern states still opposed interracial marraige and even up to the early 90's Alabama still denied marriage licenses to interracial marriage and even a few years ago a judge in Georgia refused a marriage license to a black/white couple. Do bigots really think that their religions, their morals, their rights trump everyone else's? Do you?

What does any of that have to do with banning same sex couples from getting married? Same sex unions have existed many times and in many countries, same sex marriage bans are new and recent in time, they did not exist before bigots decided to codify into law bans on it and civil unions for gays.

I understand that you believe that and feel that way. But "fundamental rights" are held to be different things by different people. The "right" to marry is not defined in the Constitution. Marriage is not covered in what we refer to as our "Bill of Rights", or the "Rights of Man" of the French Revolution, or the Magna Carta or anywhere else. Marriage was just understood to be between man and woman until only very recently in human history. This is new legal territory and it will have to be sorted out in SCOTUS. You and I are hoping for opposite results.
