First Lady is not really a title given by law. It has no constitutional standing in most republics.

It all depends on the public eye and what is acceptable. It also deals with who has money and the ability to defend the situation or disgrace it until someone has final say.

Would you accept an unmarried first lady like the French?
Sure, why not?

Default Would you accept an unmarried first lady like the French?

First off I think the role of the first lady is overrated, she wasn't elected. On the topic I think pretty much anything will be accepted now days but I believe the President should be a positive role model and if he wants to cheat on his wife he should just wait a few years until he is out of office.

I'm confused. How can there be an unmarried first lady when the title "first lady" describes the president's wife?

If the op means a single woman as president, Yes, same with a single man for president. I think it is time we have a woman lead our country, heck they are over 50% of the population as it is.

In this case she wasn't married to the president but acted as first lady and was referred as such.
