Your ignorance is overwhelming. I work at automaker in the South. Last year I made $96k and that was less than some of my peers. Our plant gave us a 10% (of our salary) bonus on top of that. I annually get a 2-3% raise.
The median public school teacher salary where I live is $50k. They start at $37k. Where I live we have one of the highest popoulations of engineers in the entire US.
I think maybe you need some "skoolin" my friend.
You did 96 as an assembly line guy at a non union plant in the South?
The answer probably comes about from people who are skilled and have a workset and ethic that others want to have. Not something you typically find amongst the minimum wage industry,
Therefore, if where the SKILLED people work doesn't treat them right, there is ALWAYS someone else who will. I work with computers, and not only enjoy my job and where I work, but work for a "NON UNION" company, that gives is vacation time, (so much sick leave, holidays off, medical, dental, vision, short term and long term disability, life insurance, and a lot more. Incentives and money to take college courses, help with adoption, it's amazing how well we are taken care of.
Of course they want to keep their skilled workers and understand that if they don't take care of their employees, someone else will.
If a Union tried to weasel their way here, we would LAUGH them out.
Sigh...always some wonderful (and always perfect) story from a non union guy.
Yeah dude...I know. And you all lived happily ever after.
Everyone on CD is a multi millionaire skilled worker.
Does anyone on this board have any REAL stories or experiences to tell? Geez.
Do you think the workers would have voted the same way without intimidation tactics from the governor? It was a close vote. If the UAW members make less money why aren`t the conservatives here pro union? Their Bible tells them low wages are the key to a prosperous nation. Look at Haiti and Guatemala!
Laughable. Nothing from the workers who voted against the Union mentioned anything from the governor's statement as their decision. Just refer to post 42 as summed up by Kibby.

I made 80g doing no over time in a factory. I know a lot of guys who made more than I did pumping out the overtime. Are you saying only Union workers can make 96G or more?
So it's ok to be an abusive boss no matter what? Abuse is abuse and many employees do get abused by their bosses.
That's why you have human resources, credo surveys, protective legislation and federal regulations.... and of course lawyers who love to take protected species cases without a deposit.
Imagine, paying money to work is aking to paying a job placement company a % for life.
Everything I have read is that VW believes U.S. regressive law requires unionization in order to implement their Works Council concept of participatory planning and decision making among blue and white collar employees and management. So, VW remained neutral, to were seen as tacitly approving/encouraging the unionization effort. Works Councils are a different animal from the adversarial approach of U.S. unions. Just look no further than the approach unions took in Wisconsin for the worst example of union thugism.
Volkswagon was not exactly "neutral" - they did not allow any "anti-union" activity in their TN plant, they only allowed "pro-union" activity. They appear to think that the UAW would be like the German Labor Unions and they could have what they really want ..... which is a Works Council. The UAW was 'promising' a Work Council type of deal, but that's never going to happen in the USA under the rigid thumb of the Union owned National Labor Relations Board and the Leftists.
The European Works Council system is very different from Labor Relations in the USA. One big difference is that the Employers are also Unionized, another is that strikes are not really legal. Even at all that - only about 18% of the German companies are Union and profit sharing or stock ownership are almost non-existent. It's also worth noting that German Union participation is also declining and that the Far Left Socialists want a system more militant like the USA Unions, instead of the Work Councils.
For those who are interested in the system of Work Councils ....
The union lost the vote because those workers want to keep their jobs for the long haul, that's why.
That's probably part of it, but the heart of the matter is that the majority of the work force just didn't trust the Union. You would have to live in a cave to not be aware of what the Unions did in Wisconsin, what they and the Labor Relations Board did to Boeing, that Obama has packed the Labor Relations Board illegally and it took the US Supreme Court to try and stop that. Everyone is aware of what has happened to Detroit and that the US Taxpayer was forced into bailing out the Detroit Auto industry - we took a Bath on that. We've seen Union marches against private citizens (people who work for banks), we saw the Unions refuse to plow streets in NY in a snow storm and refuse to pick up garbage. We saw the Chicago Teacher Union strike for huge wage increases.
People don't Trust Unions and they don't Trust our Federal Government ..... that's the real reason for the vote.

Yup..we bailed out the unions and threw investors and retired workers under the bus.
Normal Joe remembers.
Only 10% of private sector workers are in a union.
Bailing out the union at the expense of private citizens wasn't forgotten.

Yes, this is a real problem for the unions. They are far to involved in politics for many employee's. They do not want to see their due's going to support candidates they themselves do not support. Indeed many can argue they do not want to see their company supporting candidate's they do not support also but they don't get to vote on that in the same way.
