The thread was started on a false or at least incomplete assumption. Be a single parent with kids and you are far better off at tax time than a married couple with kids in certain cases.

We get rid of the bloated IRS that way. We end the way politicians use the promises of tax breaks for votes. It takes 2 minutes to fill out your form. Heck, look at all the tree's we will save.

I agree. If a spouse decides that they will not work, there is no reason that I should pay their retirement if the working partner dies without planning for their mates financial well-being.
Upshot though will be a lot more unmarried old men wandering the streets looking for their cheerios.
I do think that our tax code should be blind to a taxpayer's situation. There is no reason that a single person should get more withheld from their paycheck than a married person. I do think the tax code should be simplified and all deductions, besides the standard deduction, and credits eliminated.

We should simply tax what we spend and nothing else.
