republicans got the 13th and 14th amendments ratified, and republicans pushed the very civil rights act that president johnson signed into in 1964, only the republicans pushed for it in 1957. interestingly enough it was johnson, then senator, that pushed to gut the bill that eisenhower eventually signed into law. then in 1964 when johnson was pushing the civil rights bill we all know now, it would have FAILED except that republicans, and northern democrats voted for the bill. the southern democrats voted AGAINST the bill. try getting up to speed by reading the congressional records for 1964 regarding the bill.
Funny you say that because your statement is incorrect. It wasn't Republicans that did all this, it was Northern politicians, both Republicans and Democrat. The Southern Republicans and Democrats were against these civil rights bills, and present day it is those Southern minded Republicans that run the Republican party that wants to get rid of these civil rights bills.
true, but note that at the time the republicans were a distinct minority party in the south, and were also the overall minority party, and without the republican vote, the civil rights act would not have passed.
That isn't the same as saying Republicans passed those bills and acting like Democrats didn't support them as well. Southerners didn't support civil rights, Northerners did regardless of political party.

And it was NOT the same bill at any point.
If you want to put it that way okay, it doesn't make sense and gives credit to someone who didn't do much compared to the Civil Rights marches. Government, like it usually does, always comes after the fact and steals the credit.
I do wonder if very small businesses should be forced to do business with whomever shows up at their doorstep. At the very least, I think sole proprietorships and partnerships should be allowed to refuse service to anyone - for whatever reasons they choose.

Pure crapola. What about individuals who also need those services? Should they also lose their right to associate or not associate with whoever they choose?
I would have to agree with Pat on this one. As a nation, we have seriously gone down hill since the Civil Rights Act was passed in the 60's. The section ruling on private industry was flatly unconstitutional. The Act had these elements added by Emmanuel Celler (D - N.Y.) after hearings during the negotiation. Republicans, though they were widely in support of the Act should have demanded this be taken out. It was blatantly an expansion of government illegaly into the private sphere, and short-sighted people that they were, they never imagined how the amount of abuses would ensue.
Considering that it is normal human behavior to prefer associating with people of your background (whether it is racial, religious, gender, or economic class), we need the Civil Rights Act in place. Sorry, Pat, but you are so so wrong about this.
