This has nothing to do with the Cold War. The ignorance of the right and the penchant of its representatives to reduce a complex issue to an irrelevant link never ceases to astound....

Ukraine's eastern half is ethnic Russian. Putin needs to hold on to Sebastopol, his navy's Black Sea port. Ukraine is going into bloody civil war, and will likely split along ethnic lines, with Crimea becoming a Russian vassal state, and a weak, shaky Ukrainian govt in Kiev.

There's not a god damn thing Obama, or ANY US president can or should do about this. This is between Russia and the Ukraine. It doesn't involve the US.
If Crimea does not want to be part of a western leaning Ukraine, then it is probably to everyone's benefit to allow them not to be.

Ok, so what should Obama do?

While I don't support an intervention,it's naïve or willfully blind to act like it's not an outright takeover by Russia. Far from benign.

Here come McCain, right on schedule: "We're all Ukrainians now"

McCain: 'We Are All Ukrainians'

Uh, no we're not, John. Any more than we were "all Georgians" in '08.

THANK GOD Obama is our president. I'd be scared $&@$less right now if it was a Republican neocon.

He didn't!

Well, he did say we are all Georgians back in 2008 as well, so he is consistent in his belligerency. I wonder how many wars we would be in around the world had McCain won.

But.... didn't Obama already give a speech where he drew this vague line in the sand, as a warning against any military intervention?

We can only hope that the Russian invaders will be so stupid as to attend and outdoor wedding in the Ukraine, because then Obama will launch a surprise drone attack.

I seriously doubt Putin wanted any part of this. The guy is in a box. Russia has very little to gain and a lot to lose by the political troubles in Ukraine.
