Obama departs for the Netherlands on Sunday evening having already announced multiple rounds of sanctions on Russia, targeting top aides to Putin and, perhaps more importantly, key industries – all in the hope of hitting Russia’s economy after appeals to abide by international law failed.

My guess is the politics were different then and I am guessing Russia didn't have an issue with Hawaii.

Putin also declares Hawaii a part of Russia

HONOLULU — Acting in defiance of international condemnation, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his intention to annex Hawaii as well as Crimea on Tuesday, in a move that flies in the face of imposed sanctions and enraged and confused world leaders.

“Hawaii has always been an integral part of Russia in the hearts and minds of its people,” said Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace to an audience of political elites. “You see, it is cold here. The idea of playing little ukulele under palm tree? Yes. That is an idea that reaches far back into Russian history.”

In a satirical sense of course.

A big part of American exceptionalism is our strange right to be hypocritical and see no conflict in it whatsoever.

It's a HUGE part of our DNA.

The difference, as far as I can tell, is that the Crimeans actually wanted to be annexed.

So Tell us the history of the Hawaiian annexation. Who did the US annex Hawaii from? What year was that? How long was it a territory? When did the state hold its territorial convention? When did Congress accept the territorial committee. When did it become a state?

Did this event take 2 weeks and involve paramilitary volunteers? Putin is facing issues in Russia that need to be hidden, so he starts a campaign and uses nationalism to hide the problems.
