Its kind of funny. All these places throw away left over coffee and pastries and foods if no one buys it at the end of the day or night. They are not allowed to sell it even at discount. So much food goes to waste.

It's simple economics. If coffee was given away for free, why would you pay $1, 50 cents, whatever for it

Seems to be similar thing here. 19 yr old. Not really a fan of this site (TP) and hard to say what really happened. The lying isn't good, however, if this occurred.

Which is most likely why she was fired. If she had been honest, I think most employers would have informed her that while her intentions were good, it was not her coffee to give away and that in the future she should just pay for the coffee or ask her employer if she should pay for the coffee.
Having an employee who gives things away without permission and then lies about it isn't good.

I don't think the owner was wrong for firing the girl. He could have utilized a less harsher punishment but at the end of the day she was clearly wrong and he is within his right to fire her.
I don't think the girl had any bad intentions or "gave it away because it wasn't hers." What I think happened is she felt bad after talking to him and told him to get some coffee. Being young she probably saw it as the equivalent of how casually people get refill's from a McDonald's when they are dining in. I don't think it registered to her that she did something wrong because it was such a trivial thing.
When she was confronted by the owner, she became nervous because shes a young girl. She realized she was wrong and lied because she didn't want to get fired. She probably hoped that it would be the end of that incident. Unfortunately, the homeless man coming back the next day sealed her deal. Her boss was extra pissed that she gave away coffee and lied so she got fired.
Maybe if she didn't lie, things could have been different. However, I don't think she is a bad person. Just someone who is young, naive, didn't think things through before offering the coffee and she had a good but misguided sense of charity.

I'm glad you can read the owner's mind. As above, there seems to be some retaliation going on here. Why I'm shocked, just shocked!
Well, she is from a generation of what's mine or his can be yours also! Who's fault is it really? Who's teaching kids to help others, even if it means dipping into the pocket next to you?
