Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines have a significant difference between the situation in Crimea. In Crimea we had a treaty that said we wouldn't invade, and that if they were invaded we would complain about it. In the other places we have much more explicit guarantees I suspect.
Im sure if we did do something all the people complaining now about us not doing something, would instantly complain about is doing something. Pure partisanship.

Obama seems to be hinting that the U S will back Japan over their island dispute with China. I do not think the U S will go to war over the islands and most likely punish them with limp wristed sanctions. Much like the sanctions on Russia. I mean come on folks do we really want to mess with China over some islands that is closer to their mainland then Japan? And if we sanction China would their re action make it worse for us.
I assume you mean Taiwan. I agree US should not go to war against China over it.
The Chinese are not anxious to go to war with Taiwan. It would be very costly. The Taiwanese would fight with everything they have and their military is considerable.
The Chinese have more to lose from sanctions than the Russians, so I doubt they are going to follow Putin's example. US Sanctions against Russia aren't going to bother most Russians but sanctions against China imposed by the US would have a significant impact, as China needs to sustain it's current economic growth.
Russia has already called the US bluff twice & walked over our red lines - Syria and Ukraine.
Don't lol me please. Everything is upside down...
It is the US crossed over the red lines of other countries : in Syria (supporting al-qaeda thugs) and in Ukraine (supporting illegal the neo-nazi's coup and brazenly meddling in Russia' business).
And by the way, were the red lines of the moral humane values walked over by the US when its military forces criminally bombed Yugoslavia (a former european country) in 21st century? Or when they killed peaceful people in Iraq? Or when the american drones killed peaceful people in Pakistan? and so on...
