Why does common sense (let alone
the objective facts) make that difficult to believe?
In 2011 (the last year for whcih complete figures are available) there were 8,583 homicides by firearm in this country, vs. 1,694 homicides by knife (or other cutting instrument). At the same time, of all
aggravated assaults committed in the US, 137,857 of them were committed with firearms, and 127,509 were committed with knives or cutting instruments. The math is simple.
One out of every 17.1 firearms assaults ended up killing the victim.
One out of every 76.3 knife assaults ended up killing the victim.
Based on those numbers, it appears that guns are actually
more than four times more lethal than knives.
So... armed with that information, how many of those 20 wounded do you speculate would have died had a gun been involved rather than a knife?

Anything "can" be anything. We are asking about general rules, not special cases.

Any question is answerable. Some answers are merely less speculative than others.
