In times past I read this history and never understood why these workers would go to war over a job. I thought that if you don't like your job, get another one. Now in this era of Pres. Obama, I am beginning to understand. I'm seeing private sector blue collar workers being squeezed, and being taken to the brink of violence. And I understand Pres. Obama's fear of , as Woody Guthrie put it, "a gun in every hand."
Why do people think the middle class feeling a squeeze is some new thing that is only Obama's fault? People have been warning that we have been screwing ourselves over for decades.

You then do not understand the lessons of Ludlow. This marked the beginning of the revolt against the oligarchs and really contributed to the charitable giving by Rockefeller. Public opinion began to be fiercely against him. The massacre and the experiences of the immigrants in the coal fields contributed to the legal enforcement of worker rights against employers.
Ludlow had nothing to do with unemployment but with employees getting a fair deal, or more accurately, them being able to bargain for a better deal. Think of the president's current move to raise the minimum wage or to ensure equal pay. That's the legacy of Ludlow.

Not sure I'm following you. Workers are being squeezed by decades-long outsourcing and low pay. Where does Obama fit into this equation?
he is in charge now and working to get gun ownership revoked.
We are headed back into the kinds of things that lead to the need for unions in the first place.
