Lofty ideals, to be sure.

Unrealistic and about as dreamy as wishing there were unicorns, but lofty.

I'm an advocate of downsizing and limiting government authority at every level.

Which, unfortunately, nobody who has a chance of getting in public office higher than a city level will honestly advocate.

Believe me, I'm all about getting government out of marriage, but it's -never- going to happen. So the next logical step would be to change it to a blanket "consent between adults" statement. Covers gay marriage, incest marriage (which yes, should be legalized) and poly marriage. Only trick with poly marriage is changing up the tax/inheritence laws to allow for it.

Well, that is about as good as it can get, since a civil contract is government interference As long as we provide a framework for inheritance, medical access, adoption, etc.. that is equally applied for all consenting adults, you can't really ask for anything more.

I am willing to accept nationwide gay marriage if the rights of Christians are protected, in exchange for ending the possibility of the Dream Act and illegal alien amnesty OR a pledge to never again use gas tax money for mass transit and the construction of the Keystone Pipeline and an end to the war on coal. I think that would be a legitimate compromise with the liberal side.

Not a liberal, but I find it repugnant that you would bargain about fundamental constitutional rights. Seriously, bargain about something else, but that is like saying you will allow blacks to eat at woolworths or women to vote if the government will just take economic positions you like. Some things are too fundamental to be bought and sold for 40 pieces of silver. Equality before the law, human dignity, and the rights enshrined in the Constitution certainly count!

Can we keep gay marriage illegal and let gay sex stay legal? I'm asking for a friend.

Keep? Gay marriage isn't illegal and neither is "gay sex" (whatever that is).

Seriously? Human rights as a bargaining chip?

Liberals also consider the illegal alien Dream Act and the illegal alien amnesty to be "human rights".
