Christian biologist fired for beliefs, suit says - Yahoo! News (broken link)
Thought this maybe an interesting topic for discussion.
This one sentence says it all:
Quote:
The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination dismissed the case this year, saying Abraham's request not to work on evolutionary aspects of research would be difficult for Woods Hole because its work is based on evolutionary theories.
It is a non-issue since Abraham was fired for refusing to do the work for which he was hired.
Article says..."Abraham, who was dismissed eight months after he was hired, said he was willing to do research using evolutionary concepts but that he had been required to accept Darwin's theory of evolution as scientific fact or lose his job."
I think this guy has a good case ~ why would he have to accept Darwin? I mean, I don't have to believe that beef is good for you and doesn't contribute to high cholesterol just to work at a beef plant an accounts payable clerk. I can still do my job top-notch despite the fact I don't agree with beef. (Just an example ~ I like beef...)
Sounds like a he said/she said. If the board ruled against him- chances are he was not in fact willing to work on the evolutionary aspects of research.
And just as an aside I wonder why would he want to spend his life trying to further research in something he does not essentially believe in? Talk about a fulfilling life.
Seems like the Yahoo title was a bit misleading, the dismissal seems to be justifiable and work process related:
The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination dismissed the case this year, saying Abraham's request not to work on evolutionary aspects of research would be difficult for Woods Hole because its work is based on evolutionary theories.
Abraham said this condition was never spelled out in the advertisement for the job and that his dismissal led to severe economic losses, an injured reputation, emotional pain and suffering and mental anguish.
How many job ads have every aspect of employment completely spelled out?
And just as an aside I wonder why would he want to spend his life trying to further research in something he does not essentially believe in? Talk about a fulfilling life.
Because he's able to separate his work from his personal life???

So he got fired and now is looking to make political hay to get some money for his "emotional pain and suffering and mental anguish" at being let go.
Okay, so I read this "Abraham, who was dismissed eight months after he was hired, said he was willing to do research using evolutionary concepts but that he had been required to accept Darwin's theory of evolution as scientific fact or lose his job.

So was he willing to do the job or not. I'm still unclear on this.
If they hired him to do research based on evolutionary theory, then he should do it. If they required him to state unequivocally that he fully believed Dawin's theory, then that is a bit screwy. One can have knowledge of and work with the concepts of a theory even if they don't entirely believe it.
For example, when it comes to literary analysis, I can approach something via the concepts of Marxist, psychoanalytic, deconstructionist, <insert theory here> theory, that does not necessarily mean that I subscribe to said theory, but I that I understand it an am able to draw conclusions through the lens of that theory.
