Government is supposed to protect our rights, not take away our rights. Government is supposed to create a society in which people can live their lives reasonably secure from the threat of murder, assault, theft, or foreign invasion ("commander in chief").

Was Benghazi prevented? ... was anyone held accountable?

Unfortunately, most governments fail to live up to Jefferson’s vision. 1st, government doesn't do a good job of swiftly apprehending and punishing those who violate our rights. 2nd, they seek to helping themselves by taking on more and more power, intruding themselves into more aspects of our lives, and demanding more of our money.

Allow any one person or body of people to hold to much power and they surely will abuse it.

Government is politicians, mainly devoted to exploiting the population for the benefit of its own members. . . .

The reality is most of us are too busy working, and taking care of our families to watch what the rulers are doing. What normal, productive person can read a single one of the 1,000-page budget bills that Congress passes each year to find out what’s really in it?

Not one American in a hundred knows how much he really pays in taxes, given the many ways that politicians hide the real costs. That is abuse. And there are people who actually want bigger government?

Billions of dollars are spent every year in Washington to get a piece of the trillion dollars of taxpayers’ money that Congress spends every year. Yes... there are countless newsletters that tell people what kind of money the government is handing out and how to get their hands on it. Here is an ad from the Washington Post:

Infrastructure . . . is a new Washington buzzword for:

A. America’s crumbling physical plant? $3 trillion is needed to repair highways, bridges, sewers, etc.
B. Billions of federal reconstruction dollars? The 5 cents per gallon gasoline tax is only the beginning.
C. Your bible for infrastructure spending, where the money is going and how to get your share, in a biweekly newsletter?

ANSWER: All of the above. Subscribe today.

Of course, trillion-dollar governments handing out favors like Santa Claus. The state tries to confuse us, taking our money as quietly as possible and then handing some of it back to us with great ceremony.

Then I would guess you are a Libertarian, or at least have some strong libertarian leanings they way I do.
I'm fiscally conservative but I'm not particularly religious, so my social morals are not guided by the same divining rod that many social conservatives use, even though I can be socially conservative on some issues and am often sympathetic to those with ChristIan based morals on some levels.

By voting for politicians who believe in higher taxes you may as well be there driving the getaway car. Of the stolen money the government takes a huge amount while you get very little.

People who believe in big government are foolish and useful government idiots, naively believing that government cares about them. Very naive and foolish.

A conservative is someone who believes that people should be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. They believe in the freedom to take control and responsibility for your own life. They also believe in consequences for your actions. A conservative doesn't buy into the nihilism and hedonism of the present age or buy into the idea that just because it's some arbitrary year on the calendar that we should just let all hell break loose and honor and morality no longer matter.

A Republican is a member of a self-serving political party. The leaders of this party don't really give a damn about their nation one way or the other they only seek to increase their wealth, status, and power.

I don't know that Chicago would be the model for small government anywhere. I can't imagine dealing with the levels of bureaucracy they have there. From your point of view, I could see why you say that. However, Chicago didn't have to make everything so centralized either. That was a choice which naturally limits your ability to have a voice in your local community. It's really too bad too because I imagine you always feel like 'you can't fight city hall' living with a government like that.

The problem, as I stated, is that power doesn't rest in a vacuum. Stripping the government does not mean more freedom as long as people have the means and drive to take yours.

I hate government waste as much as the next man, but often one man's waste is another's investment.

I stand by that. I think it without a doubt accurate and explains much of what conservatives do and say in the area of public policy.

How on the one hand they complain about big government, but on the other hand the most popular government programs with conservatives are the largest and costliest with the most government employees and the most government control.

Big government in America is Social Security, Medicare and all military spending and yet conservatives love all three programs.

Instead what conservatives mostly complain about when talking about big government are a handful of some of the smallest least expensive, least controlled by the federal government programs that benefit certain groups of Americans.

When one understands that for conservatives exclusion is the core of that ideology, and hatred of out groups is manifestation of that core belief, then it is easy to reconcile the passion with which they attack the smallest government program and generally liking and supporting the largest ones based on who those programs help in the minds of conservatives.

Those big government programs help people that conservative identify with and those smaller programs in the minds of conservatives help out groups people they hate.
Two of those 3 will bankrupt this nation, that is a fact and yet you leftist cant even do basic math..

Once again where is your proof that was hate other groups?

Lets see some of the Democratic party high lights, shall we?

Funny didn't the Democratic Party fight a war to keep blacks enslaved?

Didn't the Democratic Party and the KKK help terrorize blacks and keep them from voting by whippings, lynchings, and shootings?

Didn't the Democratic Party pass some of the first gun laws, disarming blacks just days after the civil war ended?

Didn't the Democratic Party support Jim Crow laws?

Didn't the Democratic Party support the eugenics movement that was aimed at reducing and eliminating most of if not all of black America?

The Truth About Margaret Sanger
"I accepted an invitation to talk to the women's branch of the Ku Klux Klan...I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses...I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak...In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered." (Margaret Sanger: An Autobiography, P.366)

"Colored people are like human weeds and are to be exterminated." Margaret Sanger

Didn't the Democratic Party block every civil rights until 1964?

Didn't the Democratic Party create the Scam know as "The Great Society Act" and started a war on poverty that has cost us trillions and we only have more poverty now then in 1964?

Doesn't the Democratic party support Amnesty which will make it harder for black Americans just to stay afloat?

Doesn't the Democratic Party block school vouchers ad charter schools and force students into failed schools just to help union thugs?

Doesn't the Democratic Party make it harder and harder and more expressive to start a business?

Doesn't the Democratic Party oppose Gas and Oil Production, making the cost of power and fuel drop, allowing more people to keep more of their money?

Doesn't the Democratic party favor moronic gun laws that leave people helpless against armed thugs and gang members?

Man, you have some wrapped views of what reality is...
