There is no "greatest" country on earth. That term is too subjective. It's like asking who the most beautiful woman is, or greatest baseball player of all time. Different folks will give different answers for any number of reasons. I DO know though, that if there really was, it wouldn't be america, that's for sure. High CEO pay, a super strong military, and the "freedom" to walk around with enough weaponry to impress a Middle Eastern warlord, does NOT a great country make.
America-Europe equals many countries. You can't say Europe like all European countries are the same as well as America as USA is much different from Mexico. Lets compare The USA vs Holland for instance instead of America vs Europe.
For future reference "America" is short for United States of America.
But that was my point. From your perspective California might be great, I see a state headed to decline.
The post WW2 boom that California experienced couldn't last forever. That was never realistic. It was inevitable that a state as large as California with all those varying interests would hit a serious trouble spot eventually.
I don't see it as a "decline." The state just ran right smack into reality...the whole country has.
It's nothing that can't be fixed, but Californians have to be willing to fix it.
Still though, it's an incredible state. Regardless of what people say, tens of thousands of people flock there every year to make a go of it. If you can make it, the lifestyle and weather are as good as it gets. And really, you don't need much more than gas money to enjoy a lot of what California has to offer.

I will give you credit for apparently being an optimist and seeing the pony under all the poo. You are right, if the people in my state would roll up their sleeves and work on the problem California might shine again. The weather is beautiful, the gorgeous scenery is right out the back door. I just wish I had your optimism. But for now, Montana beckons.
I lived there in the 90s (LA) going back today is much nicer, lots of new construction and less crime (thats going on all over but more so in California)
Still wanna see the new bridge in San Francisco.
