Calling Nigeria a country with a functioning government would be a huge stretch. It's a poverty riddled, oil rich kleptocracy that couldn't muster a squad of capable traffic cops if they wanted to. In interviews with NPR this week relatives of the kidnapped girls said repeatedly that the last thing they wanted was the Nigerian military to mount rescue operations.

South Africa or Kenya this country isn't.

Yawn. 2/10 some effort but not likely to get any bites.

If you have spent any serious time in Nigeria, you would have an understanding of what the Nigerian Government and its armed forces is capable of doing and how easy it is to search and hunt down anyone in the North East corner of Nigeria. Nigeria needs all the help it can get!!!!

I'm for trying to save the girls, but we have to stop lying to ourselves what the true nature of Islam is. The Muslims did this because they mean to wipe out all Christians and other non-Muslims. This is how entire nations become Islamic nations.

Well, to be fair, some/many Christians have historically committed atrocious acts as well.

Agreed.

To be fair, though, none of our current soldiers were drafted.

That's irrelevant. This is about the efficient use of military resources for purposes that benefit the United States.

[this deployment isn't one of them]

And having a better image does not benefit the United States?

Also, this is relevant because thankfully none of these troops are forced to join the U.S. military.

Better is relative. Intervention in the internal affairs of another nation does not always result in the outcome we want. I don't see the purpose of our involvement. If image was that important, a lot more countries would be involved. But since there aren't, I'm going to write this off as a dog and pony show.

And, although I am thankful the troops were not forced to join, how is this relevant to the discussion?
